Easter celebrates the resurrection from the dead of Jesus, three days after he was executed by the Romans on the Cross. Unlike Christmas, the actual day of Easter is not celebrated on a set date and generally takes place towards the end of March or at the beginning of April depending on the moon. Easter Day is held on the first Sunday after the first full moon taking place after the vernal equinox. This year Easter falls in April with Good Friday being on the 14th April and Easter Day on 16th April, with Easter Monday on the 17th April.

The other most well-known symbol of Easter is the Easter Egg as well. Easter eggs can come in different forms and can be decorated to celebrate the Easter festival or made out of chocolate, which is the most well-known form of Easter Eggs. The custom of the Easter egg began in the early Christian community who coloured eggs red in memory of the blood of Christ which was shed at his crucifixion. For Christians the Easter egg is a symbol of the empty tomb after the resurrection of Jesus. The oldest tradition was to use chicken eggs which were dyed, but the more modern custom is to use eggs made from chocolate which can be filled with sweets and candy. Modern Easter Eggs can also be made out of plastic with gifts inside them as well

Usually the colouring of hard-boiled eggs and giving baskets of candy, along with an Easter Egg Hunt are great activities for children to celebrate Easter.

In Poland Easter eggs are a popular symbol of new life, from the resurrection of Jesus. This is the same for other Slavic countries’ folk traditions as well. Particularly in eastern Europe a batik style decorating process known as Pisanka produces vibrantly coloured eggs with very detailed designs and artwork.

The Easter Bunny is another popular Easter tradition as well with its gift-giving character, often carrying a basket full of Easter Eggs and candy.

Americans follow this tradition the most but is also a well know tradition in other countries as well. It is well known tradition for the President of the United States to hold an annual Easter egg roll in the White House garden for young children to enjoy.

However In Australia, as the rabbit is known as a pest, the Easter Bilby (a desert-dwelling marsupial) is available as an alternative to the Easter Bunny.
